Speech & Language Developmental Milestones

Birth to 3 Months
Makes cooing sounds, cries differently for different needs, smiles when seeing caregivers.

4-6 Months
Babbles with expression, makes gurgling sounds, responds to changes in tone of voice.

7 Months - 1 Year
Babbling includes groups of sounds, uses speech to get attention, first words may begin around 1 year.

2-3 Years
Has a word for almost everything, uses two- to three-word phrases, speech is understood by familiar listeners most of the time.

3-4 Years
Talks about activities at school or friends' homes, speaks easily without repeating syllables or words, people outside the family usually understand child's speech.

4-5 Years
Uses sentences with four or more words, tells a short story, communicates easily with other children and adults.
