Understanding Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Sports injuries can sideline athletes at any level, from weekend warriors to competitive professionals. Whether you have sprained an ankle, torn a ligament, strained a muscle, or sustained a concussion, proper rehabilitation is essential for a safe and complete return to your sport. Rushing back too soon or rehabbing incorrectly increases the risk of re-injury and long-term complications.

Our Sports Injury & Orthopedic Trauma program provides specialized Physical Therapy that goes beyond basic recovery. We not only heal the injury, we rebuild your strength, movement quality, and athletic confidence so you can return to competition at your highest level.

How Physical Therapy Helps

Sports rehabilitation follows a progressive approach that mirrors the healing timeline of your specific injury. Your Physical Therapist will design a treatment plan that advances through distinct phases, each with clear goals and criteria for progression.

In the acute phase, treatment focuses on managing pain and inflammation, protecting the injured tissue, and maintaining range of motion and strength in surrounding areas. As healing progresses, therapy shifts to restoring full range of motion, rebuilding strength, and retraining movement patterns specific to your sport.

The final phase, return to sport, is where our program stands apart. Rather than simply asking "does it feel better?" we use objective performance testing to measure strength ratios, hop distances, agility times, and sport-specific movement quality. This data-driven approach ensures you return to play only when your body is truly ready.

Treatment may include manual therapy for joint mobility and tissue healing, progressive strengthening with resistance bands, weights, and plyometrics, neuromuscular training to restore coordination and reaction time, sport-specific drills that replicate the demands of your activity, and balance and proprioceptive training to restore joint stability.

What to Expect in a Session

Your first visit begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Your therapist will assess the injury, review your sport and position demands, measure your range of motion and strength, and observe your movement patterns. Together, you will set specific goals and a timeline for return to activity.

Treatment sessions are conducted in our clinics, where we have the equipment and space for sport-specific rehabilitation. Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes and combine hands-on treatment with guided exercise. As you progress, sessions become increasingly dynamic, incorporating running, jumping, cutting, and throwing activities tailored to your sport.

Your therapist will also prescribe a home exercise program to supplement clinic sessions and accelerate your recovery.

Conditions We Treat

Our sports injury program covers a comprehensive range of athletic injuries:

  • ACL, MCL, PCL, and LCL ligament injuries
  • Meniscus tears
  • Muscle strains (hamstring, quad, calf, groin)
  • Ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability
  • Shoulder dislocations and labral tears
  • Stress fractures
  • Tendinitis and overuse syndromes (Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff)
  • Post-concussion symptoms
  • Orthopedic trauma (fractures, dislocations)

Home Strategies for Athletes in Recovery

Between therapy sessions, active participation in your recovery makes a significant difference:

Follow the progression: Do not skip ahead in your rehabilitation program, even if you feel good. Tissues need time to heal and strengthen, and premature loading is the leading cause of re-injury.

Ice and elevate: After exercise or therapy, apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes to manage inflammation. Elevation helps reduce swelling in lower extremity injuries.

Complete your home program: Your home exercises are designed to build on what you accomplish in the clinic. Consistent daily practice is essential for optimal recovery.

Communicate honestly: Tell your therapist if something hurts more than expected or if you are not feeling confident with an exercise. Your program can always be adjusted.

Cross-train safely: Your therapist can recommend alternative activities that maintain your fitness without stressing the injured area. Pool running, cycling, and upper body training are common options.

Focus on nutrition and sleep: Your body needs adequate protein, calories, and rest to repair injured tissue. Prioritize sleep and balanced nutrition during your recovery period.

Preventing Future Injuries

A key component of our program is injury prevention. Before you are discharged, your therapist will provide a maintenance exercise program focused on the muscle groups and movement patterns most relevant to your sport. This may include dynamic warm-up routines, strength exercises for commonly injured areas, flexibility and mobility work, and guidance on training load management to avoid overuse injuries.
